Health Sciences

Overview

The Health Sciences CTE prepares students to explore medical and wellness careers through authentic service learning and hands-on experiences within their own school.

Students act as the school’s health and wellness department, taking on meaningful responsibilities that promote safety, hygiene, and well-being for everyone in the building.

 

Through Porter’s Academy’s Student Nurse Mini-Triage Program and collaboration with Sports Management as Student Athletic Trainers, Health Sciences students gain early exposure to real-world healthcare, first aid, and sports medicine practices while serving their peers and community.

Daily Activities

Students in Health Sciences complete real, structured tasks that mirror what medical assistants, health aides, and athletic trainers do in professional settings.

 

Daily and weekly responsibilities include:

 

  • Operating the Student Nurse Mini-Triage Station before and after the nurse’s scheduled hours.

  • Recording student health visits, taking basic vitals (temperature, pulse, etc.), and documenting needs.

  • Providing minor first aid for common issues such as ice packs, bandages, or simple comfort care.

  • Creating health awareness campaigns focused on hygiene, nutrition, hydration, and mental wellness.

  • Managing hygiene supply stations and restocking the Wildcat Services wellness closet.

  • Supporting the school secretary and nurse by documenting visits and prioritizing students who may require faster attention or a referral to the local health center beside the school.

  • Coordinating with the Sports Management CTE before home athletic events to ensure the first aid and athletic trainer bags are fully stocked.

  • Serving as Student Athletic Trainers during games—helping set up hydration stations, monitoring injuries, and acting as runners for first aid materials when needed.

 

 

These activities give students firsthand experience in healthcare communication, confidentiality, triage management, and emergency readiness.

Student Nurse Mini-Triage Program

 

 

Because the school nurse is only available for a few hours mid-day, Health Sciences students volunteer to operate the Student Nurse Mini-Triage Station in the morning and afternoon.

 

Under supervision, these trained student leaders:

 

  • Greet students reporting for health concerns and record their names, class, and symptoms.

  • Take vital signs such as temperature using digital thermometers.

  • Provide basic care such as ice packs, bandages, or hygiene products.

  • Log every visit using a confidential triage form and mark whether the concern requires the nurse’s attention.

  • Notify the secretary when a student’s issue appears urgent so that the student can be referred immediately to the on-site community health center.

 

 

This model provides early healthcare experience while teaching professionalism, discretion, and accurate recordkeeping — all within a safe, structured environment.

 

 

 

Student Athletic Trainer Program

 

 

Health Sciences students also play a critical role in the school’s athletic operations through their collaboration with the Sports Management CTE.

 

These student athletic trainers:

 

  • Inspect and restock the Athletic Trainer First Aid Bag prior to each home game.

  • Ensure cold packs, wraps, gloves, and disinfectant supplies are ready for use.

  • Assist coaches and staff with hydration setup and player support.

  • Serve as on-call runners during games to retrieve medical supplies or notify staff if an athlete requires attention.

  • Document each event and update the inventory log for the next game.

 

 

This partnership models real interdepartmental collaboration—mirroring the teamwork between athletic trainers and healthcare professionals in the real world.
